Roberts Consulting

Inspected and reported on the condition of the roofs of industrial and public buildings. Roof types have included built up felt, single ply, asphalt, metal sheet, fibre cement sheet, tile and slate roofs, with special interest in wind induced roof failures and rainwater goods systems.

Roof Design and Product Development
Independent technical advice on the tender and procurement of new roofs at St Pancras Station, London.
Design calculations for roofing and cladding projects, including swimming pool halls and civic buildings.

Dispute Resolution
Attended arbitration hearing for 4 days and gave oral evidence.
Taken instructions on a wide variety of disputes relating to roofing and cladding.
Prepared expert reports to assist in the resolution of disputes.


Glanville Consultants - Building Investigations

Following period of training under Keith Rollinson, inspected and reported on the condition of the roofs of more than one hundred industrial and public buildings throughout the UK and Ireland.

Wind Damage
Investigated the causes of failure of a single ply membrane roof on a high bay warehouse in Rugby. Inspected a large wind damaged secret fix aluminium sheet roof in the East Midlands, followed by the development and testing of a repair system. Inspected and reported on wind damage to a traditional standing seam roof in Edinburgh.
Major Building Investigations: National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham and Deal Leisure Pool
Project Engineer responsible for a major study into the roof defects of an exhibition hall and facilities building, including the design and specification of repairs, and advising on liability. Investigation into the causes of water leakage from an insulated metal roof above a swimming pool. Design of remedial works and chairing Meeting of Experts to agree extent of works. Projects successfully completed.
Defective Buildings - Expert Witness Duties
Took instructions on more than 25 cases, after a period of training under John Glanville and attendance at appropriate CIArb/AoE seminars. Court duties included attending joint site inspections, preparing reports for exchange, providing technical advice to instructing solicitors, attending meetings of experts and conferences with counsel. Attended Official Referee's Court for five days during the course of a full trial. Attended arbitration hearing for eleven days and gave oral evidence. Attended Bond Solon Seminar on Civil Procedure Rules.

Glanville & Associates - General Structural Practice
Senior Structural Engineer in charge of a team of six engineers and technicians working on design-and-build projects, including a £3m steel framed scheme in Burgess Hill, and foundations and civil design for £2.5m commercial units in Witney. Structural appraisal and reports on the condition of more than 50 different buildings including MOD properties and domestic dwellings.

Science and Engineering Research Council - Capital Works Programme
Responsible to the Group Architect for all civil and structural engineering design; including a £750k hostel in Abingdon, a £600k concrete framed laboratory in Edinburgh and a £200k steel framed laboratory extension.

THORP Receipt & Storage Facility - Pond Hall
Design Engineer responsible to the Project Associate for the design of a £12m steel framed enclosure over an existing storage pond; including the preparation of the feasibility study, outline and detailed design, attendance at design co-ordination meetings, and control of the production of 40 working drawings and specifications.

Heysham Nuclear Power Stations - Office Building and Pressure Vessels
Site Engineer responsible for the setting out and construction of a £7m reinforced concrete office building; including the design and inspection of temporary structures and site planning. Assistant Engineer responsible for the organisation and supervision of prestressing operations on two prestressed concrete pressure vessels, and the erection of a complex ventilation system.
